Taiwan to accept “unification” pandas from China

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Taiwan has finally approved the import of two giant pandas offered as a present by China, overcoming suspicions that delayed their arrival by two years.

A zoo in the self-ruled island’s capital has passed government import checks for the pair, named Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, the Taiwanese forestry bureau said on its Web site.

China has vowed to bring Taiwan under its rule, by force if necessary, and offered the pandas in 2006 in a gesture of zoological diplomacy — their names, said together, mean “unite.”

Former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, who wanted more distance from China, was suspicious of the offer and under him the bureau had blocked the animals’ transfer, saying Taiwan did not have the facilities to care for them properly.

But he has since lost power to a party which has better ties with Beijing and so is less worried about the political overtones of accepting the pair.

President Ma Ying-jeou, of the China-friendly KMT said before he took office that the animals would be welcome and the main problem was competition over which zoo should house them.

Emergency panda talks were launched in June because of fears they might soon be too old to move.

China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since 1949, when Mao Zedong’s Communists won the Chinese civil war and Chiang Kai-shek’s KMT fled to the island.

About 1,000 of the endangered black-and-white creatures, members of the bear family, live in the wild bamboo forests of central and western China. China has presented them as symbolic gifts to nine countries, including Japan, North Korea, the United States and the former Soviet Union.

What do I do if my bird is afraid of his birdcage cover?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I just recently bought a canary and placed a cover over his cage but he’s freaking out in there. Is this normal? Will he calm down once he gets used to it? Or should I take it off his cage?

Make sure you have the light on when you start to place the cover over the cage. Cover the back and sides first and let himget use to the cover slowly. He does not see well in sudden darkness and is frightened not knowing what is going to happen to him in complete darkness.

What should the water temperature for a goldfish be?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

64-74 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal, though they can survive in water slightly colder or warmer. However, warm water holds less oxygen than cold, so water over 74 degrees isn’t the best idea. Depending where you live, room temperature is usually fine.

Anywhere between 67 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is good to keep your fish happy. Believe me, I speak from expirience.

Do golf courses …?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Do they set poison to repel birds…or to help control how many come to live there? I found a young sparrow by the golf course that had some green substance that jammed its beak shut. We fixed it…but it seems to have gotten poisoned by the green substance…please help me figure out what it was

Golf courses cannot legally put out posion for birds..all wild native birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, any bird that is harmed, or killed is punishable by fine or jail time. Some may put out poison for rodents that birds or mammals may get into. There are laws about this as well, as birds can be affected by ingesting the poison directly or by secondary exposure by eating a poisoned rodent. If they are setting out poison, you should contact your local US Fish and Wildlife Service office or Dept. of Natural Resources to make sure this is even legal. Golf courses can sometimes obtain permits to kill birds such as coots that hang around there ponds and and leave waste everywhere. They must go through legal means to do this however, and the birds are usually shot as the permits do NOT allow poisons to be used to do this.

——

I believe they do it’s the same as putting spikes on buildings to stop the pigeons some people do not like wildlife near their property they’re just money hungry you should find out what type of poison it is though definitely to try to help it.

——

Yes. Some golf courses and other business do use a poison to control pigeons. It’s called avitrol and is coated on feed corn. It’s horrible, and can poison other birds.

Birds who are poisoned usually appear confused and disoriented.

Another cause could be herbicides and pesticides, that are used to treat the lawns. These may also be toxic to birds.

Not sure if the bird you found was poisoned, but it is a possibility.

How to persuade a client to get vaccines and heartworm preventative for “indoor” animals?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Considering studies have overwhelmingly proven that we are horribly overvaccinating and overmedicating our pets, I think a smarter solution would be for you to do some research and realize that vets are in fact poisoning our pets.

My cat gets rabies updated every 3 years, and that’s it. He is THE healthiest cat in the world, at age 11, he’s never been ill, has perfect white teeth, is in perfect condition, and acts like a kitten still. My dogs get heartworm meds only in the hot wet months of summer, and also only get rabies updates every 3 years. I do not use flea and tick products. My animals are perfectly healthy and I think it’s ridiculous the amount of overkill vets push on their clients these days. I’ve had cats since I was born and none of them have ever gotten heartworms!!! Nor have I ever had a dog with kennel cough, and my dogs sit in my grooming salon every day and go to the dog park 3x per week!

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?

What can I do for my local SPCA?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

You can organize a pet food drive (ask what kind they feed before doing this, and specifically request that kind).

You can offer to sponsor an animal by donating a small amount of money each month.

Spread the word about adoption vs. buying from breeders.

Raffle off something pet-related and donate the proceeds to them.

Ask everyone you know for “Christmas presents” for the shelter.

Encourage people to donate, perhaps instead of buying you one present they intended to, they could donate the cost to the shelter.

Visit the director and offer to help with paperwork, adoption screenings, addressing envelopes, or whatever else needs to be done.

Report animal cruelty and neglect immediately instead of letting the problem worsen, and encourage others to do the same.

Ask what supplies they need and then get together with your class or coworkers to send a box full of their preferred type of toys/food dishes/etc.

Get together a group to bring the office workers hot chocolate and sing them carols during a lull between visitors. Hand out Christmas cards with animal pictures that say something like ‘You’re the real Santa Paws’, etc.

Adopt a pet if you can.
