Classic vs. modern design

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Most homes today, which are getting rid of old TV sets, are opting for LCD TVs. Its sleek style occupies very less storage space. There is an option of mounting it on the wall but if you do not want to do any work on walls then you will have to buy a new TV stand because the old one will definitely not work with this new flat TV.

Glass and chrome is more popular choices for LCD TV stands these days but still the classic and timeless wood stands out. Wood looks more aesthetically appealing and blends well with old furniture. These days wooden TV stands come in modern designs to house a LCD TV. It is also a very durable material, which makes it a good choice for a TV stand. TV Stands made of glass can not be used for homes which have children.

There are ready to assemble kits also available in wood which also offer a cheap alternative. If you want to save money then you can look around for designs on net and retail shops and get a wooden TV stands made at home with a carpenter. This custom made TV stand will have shelves and partitions as per your requirements.

Garmin Products

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I have been trying to choose between all of the different garmin products to try to decide which aircraft satellite navigation system to buy. There are a few differences between them all including the price. I firstly liked the Garmin 496 but then when I started reading about all of the other types of garmin products I started to think that they were all good. It is a bit tricky though because I do have a budget but I also have certain requirements and I want good value for money. The Garmin 695 caught my attention as it fitted all of these requirements but then I looked at the Garmin 696 and realised that it had some functions which, although they were not on my requirements list, would be really useful to me. The problem is that it was just a bit dearer than my budget. I am in a bit of a dilemma now and I am taking a very long time making a decision because I know that once I make it, there is no changing my mind and this will be a purchase that I hope will last for a very long time so it needs to be right.

Special Functionalities - Trail camera & Digital rangefinder

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Trail cameras are popular for its much new functionality. One such feature is the time lapse function. In this we just need to place the camera in a position and program it to take pictures in some time intervals. This feature is widely used nowadays in many wild life channels which show various stages of growth of animals or even for plants. This feature is used based on the imagination of the user. The normal video where this technology is used is to capture a pupa becoming a butterfly. This shows the users talent and creative ability. Digital rangefinder cameras work on digital imaging technology. This technology was applied for range finder cameras in 2004. Epson RD1 is the first digital rangefinder camera, which is actually collaboration between Epson and Casino. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras have the same interchangeable lens used on their film or non digital counterparts. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras are expensive when compared to SLRS. There are some advantages and disadvantages of digital rangefinder cameras over SLR cameras. There is no moving mirror in the Digital rangefinder cameras so the momentary black out are avoided making it more prominent in the film industry.

TiVo, DirecTV to develop new DVR

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

TiVo Inc (TIVO.O) is developing a new digital video recorder for satellite TV provider DirecTV (DTV.O), rekindling a strained relationship and potentially opening the door to boosting the number of its subscribers.

TiVo shares climbed more than 2 percent on Wednesday after the companies said that they had extended their current deal and added the development, marketing and distribution of a new high-definition DirecTV DVR featuring TiVo service. The product’s launch is expected in the second half of 2009.

Terms of the deal, which also includes an extension of intellectual property arrangements, were not disclosed. But in a federal filing, TiVo said DirecTV will pay a substantially higher monthly fee for households using the new high definition DirecTV DVRs than it does for previously deployed models.

In addition, fees paid by DirecTV are subject to monthly minimums that escalate during the term of the pact starting in 2010 and those minimum payments are “substantially higher” than in the prior agreement, TiVo said.

DirecTV was once the biggest source of new subscribers to TiVo’s television recording service. But their relationship soured in 2005 when DirecTV, the top U.S. satellite TV broadcaster, said it would no longer market TiVo’s set-top boxes and would use its own system made by NDS Group Plc (NNDS.O).

However, the companies did not sever their ties. In 2006, they extended their service and support agreement for three years, allowing customers to continue to receive maintenance and support for their TiVos.

Many of the satellite operator’s more than 16 million users still own TiVo set-top boxes, but their numbers have been dwindling.

At the end of the second quarter, TiVo had a total of 3.6 million subscribers. Of that 1.7 million were “TiVo-owned” — users who pay a monthly fee directly to the company.

TiVo will work with DirecTV to make a DVR product for customers with high-speed Internet service that will support both companies’ latest features.

“This new deal should minimize the DTV attrition headwind TiVo has felt as DTV’s subs have moved to HD (where there is no TiVo offering today),” said Citigroup analyst Tony Wible in a note to clients. “Overall, the new deal should help protect the roughly $22 million of high margin revenue TiVo receives from DirecTV today.”

The new agreement runs through February 2015, with DirecTV having the right to extend it until February 2018, TiVo said.

DirecTV will continue to develop and offer its own set-top boxes for both new and existing customers.

Shares of TiVo rose 32 cents to $8.83 in morning trade on the Nasdaq on Wednesday. DirecTV shares edged up 17 cents to $27.79.

I just bought an infocus lp650 projector for a little under 600.00 is that a good deal?

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

the projector has only 15hrs on a 2000 hour bulb are these good projectors? thanks ..whats the best projector for this price?

In Focus make some very good projectors so it’s certainly a “brand name”.

The LP650 is an older projector originally selling for over $3000. That said, projector prices have dropped in the last couple of years, so a new projector with equivalent performance would be in the $1000 range.

The specs (DLP, 1024×768, 2500 lumens, 800:1 CR, 1.4:1 zoom, component and digital input (M1), 35/33 dB noise) are a bit of a mix today. The digital and component capability are good, so is the high brightness level, but fan noise is a bit high and contrast ratio is weak in today’s world (That said the rated 800:1 is quite possibly comparable to projectors today rated at 2000:1 or even more due to the lack of standard methadology).

I can’t comment whether the DLP colour wheel speed will be high enough to minimize the possibility of inducing “rainbow effect” (look elsewhere on the site at the 1st link for further info) if you are susceptible. Older projectors sometimes had slow wheels (less than 4X) that increased the chance … but most people are not particulelry sensitive, so it may be entirely a non issue. On a positive point DLP projectors arguably have better longivity than LCD projectors.

Yoiu could probably get a projector with 800×600 resolution for $300-$400, but what you have is a name brand projector, that should work well in a home theatre environment (depending on video processing capability … but IF are well respected in general).

Considering a new lamp is $550 from at least one source (2nd link), I think you got a fair deal (It wouldn’t have been if it were an old lamp). That said … read the 3rd link on how to maximize lamp life.

Digital camera, Olympus Stylus 8.0 mp questions?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’m thinking today I’m gonna go get this one, it’s also water, shock, dust proof. 3X zoom. But do I need to up grade the memory card? And if so to what? I had a camera for years and it’s finally broke, a friend of mine put a different card in it and it was better, I’ve no clue what to do or just us the one that come with it???? And have you heard any good or bad about this camera?

In general the Olympus Stylus models have been very good quality and a good value for the $$$. You didn’t provide a specific model number so I cannot comment on the camera you are interested in but here is a link to web site that provides good, objective reviews of digital cameras. Check out the section of the review called Steve’s Conclusion for a quick summary of the camera features and good/bad points.

You will want to get an extra xD memory card, about 1GB will usually be good capacity for an 8 mp camera.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_…

It is also recommended to get a spare battery for the camera so that you can charge one while using the other in the camera.

HTH, Good luck

EDIT: That is a good camera, from the reviews I have seen.

P.S. IF YOU ARE BUYING ONLINE be very careful in selection of a dealer.

Where to Look for Your Gears

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

No one wants to get lost while on a boat in the open seas. Unfamiliar territories rise the fear of anyone however experienced they are. Boaters and fishermen rely on military tactical gear to travel fast, efficiently, and most importantly safe. Gears like life vest, night operation tools, and GPS devices ensure their safety in all of their journeys.

Marine GPS systems guide the way of seamen to their destination and back home. This equipment plots the bearing of the vessel so the crew has a definite guide to reach their destination. In case of distress, rescuers can easily get to them guided by the reflected signals from satellites pin pointing their exact location.

A GPS equipment may be one if not the most important technology developed to help man conquer the sea. Deep sea fishermen benefit a lot by marking rich water spots so they can return and enjoy the bounties of Mother Nature. Indeed GPS locators paved the way for saving thousands of lives worldwide.

The innovation continues for boat and marine electronics. Hobbyists, hunters, or fishermen can find the best equipment in several places:

* In military fairs where they sell second hand gears used by our soldiers. Prices are low and the quality of products are field tested and guaranteed
* Hobby shops also supply some of this equipment. It is wise to compare brands and ask for possible discounts
* Internet. Online shops carry items for different companies. Properly inquire for their features, costs, and warranties.

What is the difference between surround speakers and regular?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Is it the speaker itself or the audio channel it’s connected to?
In other words can any speaker be connected to the surround channel?

Ideally they are identical.

Back in the ProLogic days there was 1 channel for the rear which was split to the 2 speakers. Dolby told sound engineers to only put diffuse sounds (wind, rain, rumbles) to these speakers and recommended the use of dipole speakers or speakers turned to bounce sound off the wall to help hide the location.

Dolby Digital 5.1 changed all that. Each rear speaker gets a separate channel of sound and sound engineers WANT to draw your attention to the specific speaker.

Since they are making sounds swirl around now - ideally all your 5 or 7 speakers are identical to tone-match.

——

In small installations there is no difference whatsoever. I have five identical speakers and they work just fine. In large installations the two main speakers are usually floor standing speakers and if a screen is used or if the TV is mounted high enough a floor stander can be used for the center speaker too. Highly recommended. It is best by far to have the three front speakers identical.

Surround speakers should be mounted at or just slightly above ear level at the sides of the room, not behind you. If you have a seven speaker set up the two additional speakers go behind you. Obviously if this mounting scheme will not work for your room it can be modified.

There are special speakers for surround in high end installations to give a more diffuse image but I can’t make a recommendation on this. You’ll just have to listen for yourself and choose what sounds best to you.
