Vaughan could still make India trip London, Sept 29

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

England national selector Geoff Miller has admitted that Michael Vaughan could visit India this winter - as part of the England performance squad.

It was announced on Saturday that Vaughan would not take part in the senior squad`s tour of India this winter after he struggled to regain his form following his decision to step down as England captain.

But Miller said: “It is a possibility that he could link up with the performance squad, we could use that. There`s a lot of opportunities for him to play.”

He continued: “It`s all about winning matches and sessions and we`ll look after Vaughan as much as we can. We could look at that or send him out somewhere in the world.”

“We see him as an integral part of our plans. There`s lots of cricket coming up. He`s played for England for 10 years and deserves a bit of a break.”

“Andrew Strauss came back and did well (after a break) and Vaughan will hopefully do that as well.”

IAEA chief urges Iran to end its nuclear secrecy

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

A six-year probe has not ruled out the possibility that Iran may be running clandestine nuclear programs, the chief U.N nuclear inspector said Monday, urging Iran to reassure the world by ending its secretive ways.

At the opening session of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 145-nation conference, the European Union also urged Tehran to fully cooperate with a U.N. probe that is trying to assess all of its past and present nuclear activities.

“The international community cannot accept the prospect of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons,” the EU said in a statement.

Israel also took Iran to task for co-sponsoring Islamic attempts to label the Jewish state a nuclear danger to the Middle East.

“What moral standing poses sponsors of this agenda item, who do not recognize Israel’s right to exist while criticizing Israel policies aiming at securing its very existence?” asked Israeli delegate Schaul Chorev.

He was alluding to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s call for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Iran, in turn, accused the U.S., Britain and France of breaking their nonproliferation commitments by giving Israel “full uninterrupted cooperation with, and assistance in, nuclear weapon technology.”

Teheran’s delegate, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, also condemned the “illegal and unjustified engagement of the United Nations Security Council” in pressuring his country to suspend uranium enrichment — something he said would never happen.

Iran, along with ally Syria, figures directly at the Vienna conference because they were among four nations seeking their region’s nomination for a seat on the IAEA’s decision-making 35-nation board.

Tehran was running to counteract a U.S. push to have Afghanistan or Kazakhstan elected over Syria, which is under IAEA investigation for allegedly hiding a secret nuclear program, including a nearly completed plutonium-producing reactor reportedly destroyed last year by Israel.

But both Iran and Kazakhstan withdrew their candidacies by evening, said Mohammad Badi Khattag, Syria’s chief representative to the IAEA. “There is near consensus in our group for us,” he told The Associated Press. “Nobody supports Afghanistan, except Afghanistan.”

Still if the regional group did not agree on a candidate, the full conference would be asked to vote on which nation should take the board seat.

In his opening speech, the IAEA’s director, Mohamed ElBaradei, focused on Iran’s refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment program and alleged past plans to develop the bomb.

The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution Saturday critical of Tehran’s defiance on uranium enrichment, which can create both nuclear fuel and the fissile core of warheads.

Iran should “implement all transparency measures … required to build confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program,” ElBaradei said. “This will be good for Iran, good for the Middle East region and good for the world.”

Appealing for more funds, he also warned that his organization is increasingly stretched in trying to carry out responsibilities that include nonproliferation and preventing terrorists from acquiring the bomb.

The annual meeting allows the agency’s member countries to set policies that range from strengthening nonproliferation to carrying out medical and scientific research. But tensions between Islamic members and the West threaten to hamper decision-making this year.

“Jules Verne” spaceship to end life in a ball of flames

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

“Jules Verne”, Europe’s biggest, most sophisticated spaceship is about to bring its six-month mission to an end by plunging into the Pacific in a ball of flames.According to a report by the BBC News, the “Jules Verne” freighter undocked from the space station three weeks ago packed with rubbish and will take its unwanted cargo into a destructive dive.

Most of vehicle is expected to burn up in the atmosphere; only fragments will make it down to the ocean water.

Two engine firings should bring the ship out of the sky, with the events overseen from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) freighter control centre in Toulouse, France.

Mike Steinkopf, the mission director for re-entry, said that a “safety zone” has been drawn in the south Pacific some 2,700 km long by 200 km wide.

“We issue a notification to the air traffic and maritime authorities to make sure there are no planes or boats going through that zone during our re-entry time,” Steinkopf told BBC News.

Astronauts on the overflying International Space Station (ISS) and scientists in two chase planes will take pictures as the disintegrating mass of metal streaks through the morning Pacific darkness.

“Visually, we will see what appears to be a very bright meteor,” explained Jason Hatton from the chase team set by ESA and the US space agency (NASA). “It will start as a point of light with a trail, and then as it comes apart, we will see fragments,” he added.

Jules Verne, also known by the generic name Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), cost about 1.3 billion euros to develop.

Although ESA has produced many complex scientific satellites, none match the scale of the freighter.

After launch, the space truck can work out where it needs to go in space, and then makes a fully automatic docking once it arrives at its destination.

It was developed as part of ESA’s ISS membership agreement, to haul cargo, propellant, water and oxygen to the space station; and also to provide propulsion capacity at the station.

Jules Verne is currently orbiting the Earth just below the space station at an altitude of about 330 km.

The Nation’s Weather

Monday, September 29th, 2008

The Midwest and Florida were being battered by separate rain systems early Monday, while high pressure was keeping the Plains and Northwest clear.

An area of low pressure will bring stormy weather to Florida as it treks eastward across the state. Southern Florida will see heavy showers and thunderstorms as this system progresses. Areas of Florida will remain under flood watches throughout the day.

The Midwest will also see active weather on Monday. A cold front extending from the upper Great Lakes through the mid-Mississippi Valley will trigger light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms over these areas.

To the west, moisture from the south will move into areas of the Southwest and Central Great Basin. This moisture will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms over the mountain and high desert regions.

The West Coast will see enhanced fog along the coast as a trough of low pressure moves closer to the California shoreline. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected for the Coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of 22 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 111 degrees at Thermal, Calif.

Underdogs in good shape as Cluj line up Chelsea

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Romanian club CFR Cluj will believe anything is possible on Wednesday when they host Chelsea in the Champions League having blazed a trail for the competition’s supposed lightweights two weeks ago.Their stunning 2-1 victory against Roma in the Italian capital quickly put paid to the notion that the team from Transylvania boasting an exotic mix of south Americans would lack real bite on their Champions League debut.

Likewise, fellow debutants Anorthosis Famagusta from Cyprus will face Panathinaikos in Group B on Wednesday with no inferiority complex having marked their rise to Europe’s elite echelon with a gritty 0-0 draw at Werder Bremen.

Champions Manchester United will need to be on their guard too at Danish outsiders Aalborg BK on Tuesday as they try and make up for a sterile 0-0 draw against Villarreal on opening night when Aalborg held Celtic in Glasgow.

Shock seekers will also have one eye on Juventus who take a trip into the unknown to face Belarus representatives BATE Borisov who held their own despite a 2-0 defeat by nine-times European kings Real Madrid on their debut in the competition.

UEFA Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg complete the clutch of fixtures sending established Champions League regulars to unfamiliar and potentially tricky surroundings when they welcome Real Madrid having lost 1-0 to Juventus.

One of the heavyweight clashes of the second round of group fixtures occurs in Munich on Tuesday when Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich host Olympique Lyon.

On Wednesday Italian champions Inter Milan host Werder Bremen and Barcelona make the long trek to the Ukraine to play a Shakhtar Donetsk side traditionally strong at home.

UNPREDICTABLE FEEL

However, it is Chelsea’s first ever trip to Romania that epitomises the appeal of this season’s Champions League which has a fresh, unpredictable feel about it.

Romanian champions Cluj, the first team from outside the country’s capital Bucharest to qualify, made a slow start in the domestic league but Argentine Juan Culio ensured a place in the club’s folklore with a double against Roma in only Italian coach Maurizio Trombetta’s second game in charge.

Culio’s unlikely arrival in Romania followed a difficult football journey that saw him overlooked by any of his country’s major clubs. Now, 18 months after arriving, there are calls to give him Romanian citizenship so that he can play in the national team.

Chelsea have enjoyed a great start under new coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and are top of the Premier League but the Brazilian is wary of a Cluj squad boasting four Portuguese, four Argentines, three Brazilians and a Uruguayan not to mention Ivory Coast midfielder Emmanuel Kone.

Victory would put Chelsea in charge of Group A after their 4-0 defeat of Bordeaux two weeks ago but Scolari is taking no chances and has prepared a lengthy dossier on Cluj to help avoid a scary night in the Romanian hills.

“If we win we will be in a very good position…but if Cluj can win away from home (like they did at Roma) then we are in danger,” he said after Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Stoke City.

Like Chelsea, most of the main favourites to reach next May’s final in Rome enjoyed good starts with Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Liverpool and Juventus all winning.

The one notable exception was Manchester United. Alex Ferguson’s team can afford no repeat of their last trip to Denmark when they lost 1-0 to FC Copenhagen two years ago.

However, with Cristiano Ronaldo returning to form having scored in successive games this could be the moment United put down a marker.

“Ronny scored against Middlesbrough in the League Cup and he’s now scored against Bolton,” defender Patrice Evra told MUTV.

“He’s getting better. He had a big injury over the summer but now he’s looking more like the player we saw last season. Ronny’s back.”

Many claims over Kannada hit’s Tamil remake

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Confusion over the ownership of a Kannada film’s Tamil remake rights has resulted in a series of complaints being lodged with the Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC), sources said Sunday. While director S.S. Joe complained to the TFPC that producer duo V.A. Dorai and Sathaji were unduly interfering with his ‘creative work’ of ‘Nai Kutty’ launched earlier this week, another person R. Siva claimed ownership over it since it is a remake of Kannada hit ‘Nanda Loves Nanditha,’ top TFPC sources told IANS.

Though the producer duo had billed Joe as the scriptwriter and director of the Tamil venture, he was absent during the inaugural shot and has since then dropped out of sight, media reports said.

The movie’s hero Prasanna had openly admitted ‘Nanda…’ was the original source of ‘Nai Kutty’ in a media interview.

Citing this in his complaint to TFPC, Siva claimed that the Kannada original’s director Vijay Kumar had gifted the rights to him after a stint as assistant director.

‘Nanda…’, a successful debut of Kannada star Yogesh, is all about mercenary’s love affair. Dorai and Sathaji were not available for comment.

UK seeks role of India, others in G-20 in handling eco crisis

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In a bid to rope in countries like India to join hands in tackling the financial meltdown in the US, British Premier Gordon Brown has said it cannot be left to the elite G-8 club alone to come out with strategies and wanted the involvement of G-20, which includes developing nations, as well. With ways to prevent recurrence of the financial crisis high on the agenda of the world leaders assembled for the UN General Assembly here, the suggestion of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, an economist-turned politician, for a new international initiative to bring structural reform in the global financial system got instant support of Brown. During their meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly, Brown agreed with Singh that the existing global financial architecture was not robust enough to deal with the international turbulence in financial markets. Highlighting the need for broader strategies, Brown said the G-20 will be well-suited to deal with the problem.

Singh said restoration of financial confidence is the need of the hour for the healthy growth of the economy. He said he will be to happy to work with Britain and other countries to give his expertise and work on ways to overcome the financial crisis.

The Indian Prime Minister, a former World Bank economist, suddenly finds himself in a situation where world leaders are looking forward to him to evolve ways to deal with the financial turmoil. US President George W Bush, who is in the midst of firefighting operations to deal with the crisis, has already set the ball rolling when he told Singh that the one person he wanted to spend time with was the Prime Minister for his calming and serene effect.
