1. How do I teach kindergarteners English and phonics?
- phonics is bad
better teach the mKoerean ! - abc’s are always a good start…teach them animals that go with each letter of the alphabet, ha!
- in my childrens school they teach them jolly phonics check out this site
- Well it depends on the given curriculum for the school and if you are teaching English as a first or second language.
Some schools have their teachers, teach half of the alphabet in KG1 and the other half in KG2. Usually the name of the letter is taught, then the basic phonic sound of each letter . A picture or object is given or shown with the sound of the letter. This is backed up with an activity to reinforce the sound of the letter and then a worksheet- tracing the letter & colouring ( evaluation) to complete the final part of the lesson. This helps the teacher to get feedback from her teaching method and acts as a final reinforcement for the letter/s of the day/week.
This is very brief indeed, you really have to read a lot more and you will probably have some ideas from your training.
- They must learn concepts of print. Show them we read left to right, titles of books, the front the back of books…things like that. We think kids know this stuff, many do not have a clue.
Start with teaching them the letters of the alphabet, no writing, just listening and looking. Letter sound correspondence, this is an m, the sound is mmmm….then ask, what letter, m…what sound, mmmm? Vowels last. Then segmenting and blending the sounds to make words. m a t, the sounds…..say it slow…m a t….then put sounds together, what word….mat! All orally at first.
Encourage lots of talking and chatting, especially after a book you read to them. This will build vocabulary, show and tell to give them opportunities to talk, use vocabulary, you must always model correct English. Put the names of objects around the classroom…door, chair..concrete examples of words….apple..show a picture, then show a real one. Multiple exposure to vocabulary is key as well as practice.
Their level of English proficiency should determine where to start with their reading/phonics. If they do not speak ANY English, silent phase, that’s a whole other story….
A good book to get is right here. Excellent. I use it constantly. Good luck to you!
